A vehicle fire inside the Allegheny Mountain Tunnel on the Pennsylvania Turnpike caused a major shutdown of traffic today, bringing travel on one of the state’s busiest interstate corridors to a standstill and triggering a large emergency response.


According to travel advisories from the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, the incident occurred on Interstate 76 (the Pennsylvania Turnpike) inside the Allegheny Mountain Tunnel in Somerset County. The fire led to traffic being stopped in both directions while emergency crews worked to respond to the scene and ensure the safety of motorists trapped in or near the tunnel.
