A tragic crash in Polk County has left two people dead and another seriously injured following a devastating collision early Sunday morning. Authorities say the accident occurred near U.S. Highway 27 and California Boulevard in the Davenport area, drawing a large emergency response as investigators worked to determine exactly what happened.
According to preliminary information released by the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the crash involved a Genesis G70 and a Ford Explorer at approximately 3:50 a.m. Investigators reported that the Genesis was traveling southbound on U.S. 27 when it approached a red traffic signal and collided with the rear of the Ford Explorer, which had been stopped at the intersection.
Officials confirmed that the 21-year-old driver of the Genesis, who was from Summerfield, Florida, suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Authorities also stated that he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. A 30-year-old woman from Davenport who was riding as a passenger in the vehicle was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite emergency medical efforts, she later died from her injuries.
The driver of the Ford Explorer, identified as a 31-year-old Davenport man, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Officials said he is expected to survive.
The fatal accident caused significant traffic disruptions in the area for several hours while deputies and crash reconstruction teams examined the scene. Investigators from the Traffic Homicide Unit remained on-site collecting evidence, documenting vehicle damage, and interviewing potential witnesses to better understand the sequence of events leading up to the collision.
