PEI School Bus Accident – Teen Girl Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle While Waiting to Board Bus Near Dunstaffnage
A tragic school bus-related collision in Prince Edward Island has claimed the life of a teenage girl who was seriously injured last Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle while preparing to board her school bus. The incident has left the local community in shock and mourning as officials, family members, and support organizations continue to process the devastating loss.
The victim, identified as Isabella Bastardo Jiménez, was hit on Route 2 near Dunstaffnage, approximately 13 kilometres east of Charlottetown, shortly before 8 a.m. on Thursday. According to reports, she was waiting in the vicinity of her school bus stop when the collision occurred involving a tractor-trailer traveling in the opposite direction of the bus. The school bus was reportedly displaying flashing yellow lights as it prepared to stop at the time of the incident.
Following the collision, emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene and provided urgent medical assistance. Due to the severity of her injuries, Isabella was airlifted to a hospital in Halifax for specialized treatment. Despite extensive medical efforts over several days, she died in hospital on Monday.
Her death was confirmed in a statement released by the Latinos Association of P.E.I., which expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to her family. Isabella’s parents also shared a heartfelt message through City Impact Church’s Facebook page, confirming that their daughter had passed away after what they described as “exhausting every possible medical effort.”
In their statement, her parents wrote that Isabella had “gone to be in the presence of the Lord,” describing her as a “miracle” and expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support they have received from the community. They also thanked the medical teams at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown for their care and dedication during the difficult days following the accident.
The incident has prompted an ongoing investigation by the RCMP, who confirmed that the school bus involved had its warning lights activated as it prepared to stop. Authorities are working to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the collision, including road conditions, visibility, and vehicle movement at the time.
In response to the tragedy, City Impact Church held a service at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) on Sunday to support Isabella’s family and the wider community. The event brought together friends, classmates, and residents to honor her memory and offer comfort during a time of profound grief.
The Public Schools Branch has also implemented counseling and support services for students and staff affected by the incident. Officials stated that these supports will remain in place as long as needed to help the school community cope with the emotional impact of the loss.
Meanwhile, an online fundraising campaign created to assist the family has seen an outpouring of support, raising nearly $250,000 as of Monday evening. Donations continue to pour in from across the province and beyond, reflecting the widespread impact of the tragedy.
As the investigation continues, the community of Prince Edward Island remains united in grief, remembering Isabella Bastardo Jiménez as a young life taken too soon in a heartbreaking accident that has deeply affected everyone involved.
