LARGE INDUSTRIAL FIRE IN SOUTH GATE – LOS ANGELES FIRE DEPARTMENT CREWS BATTLE MAJOR BLAZE AT COMMERCIAL BUILDING AS HEAVY SMOKE ENGULFS AREA

South Gate, California – Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) crews are actively battling a large industrial fire that broke out on Sunday afternoon at a commercial building in South Gate, sending thick plumes of smoke into the air and prompting a significant emergency response across the area.

According to early reports, the fire was first detected shortly after midday when witnesses noticed smoke rising from an industrial facility located within a busy commercial zone. Within minutes, flames intensified, spreading rapidly through parts of the structure and triggering an immediate escalation to a multi-unit fire response.

Firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived on scene and quickly initiated aggressive suppression efforts. Due to the size of the building and the nature of materials commonly stored in industrial facilities, crews focused on preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent structures, many of which are closely situated in the South Gate industrial corridor.

Additional fire units were requested under mutual aid agreements, bringing in extra personnel and equipment to assist with containment operations. Ladder trucks were deployed to attack the blaze from above while ground crews worked to establish controlled hose lines around the perimeter of the building.

Heavy smoke was reported drifting across nearby streets, temporarily affecting visibility in surrounding neighborhoods and industrial roads. Authorities advised residents and workers in the area to avoid the scene and remain indoors if they experienced smoke exposure or irritation.

Traffic in parts of South Gate was disrupted as emergency vehicles secured access routes and blocked off surrounding streets to ensure firefighter safety and allow uninterrupted operations. Law enforcement officers assisted in managing road closures and redirecting vehicles away from the incident zone.

At this stage, officials have not confirmed the cause of the fire. Investigators from the Los Angeles Fire Department are expected to begin a formal assessment once the flames are fully contained and the structure is deemed safe to enter. The origin point of the fire and any potential contributing factors will be examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

No confirmed reports of fatalities have been released, and authorities have not yet provided details on possible injuries. Emergency medical teams were present on standby throughout the operation as a precaution in case firefighters or workers required immediate assistance.

Environmental monitoring may also be conducted due to the potential release of smoke and particulates into the surrounding air. Residents in nearby communities were encouraged to keep windows closed and avoid outdoor activity until air quality conditions improve.

Fire officials emphasized that industrial fires can be particularly complex due to building size, storage materials, and structural hazards, requiring coordinated multi-agency response efforts. Crews are expected to remain on scene for several hours, working through suppression and overhaul operations to ensure the fire is fully extinguished and no hidden hotspots remain.

This remains a developing situation in South Gate, and further updates will be released as the Los Angeles Fire Department continues its response and investigators begin their work at the site.
