Fire in Encino Today: Crews Battle Blaze Near 405 Freeway During Rush Hour

Firefighters are working to bring a fast-moving fire under control in the Encino area today after flames broke out along the 405 Freeway corridor near the Getty Center, causing concern during the busy afternoon commute and prompting a large emergency response across Los Angeles.

According to early reports from the Los Angeles Fire Department, the fire was first reported during rush hour when motorists observed smoke and flames rising from brush near the freeway. The location, close to the Getty Center and surrounding hillside terrain, is known for dry vegetation that can allow fires to spread quickly under the right conditions.

Fire crews were dispatched rapidly to the scene, with multiple engine companies, hand crews, and air support units responding to assess and contain the blaze. Upon arrival, firefighters began aggressive suppression efforts, focusing on preventing the fire from spreading toward residential neighborhoods, freeway infrastructure, and nearby hillside areas.

Authorities reported that the fire burned in brush and vegetation near steep terrain, which can make containment more difficult due to limited access and shifting wind conditions. Firefighters established containment lines on the ground while aerial units, when available, assisted with water drops to slow the spread of flames.

Traffic on the 405 Freeway was heavily impacted as drivers encountered smoke drifting across lanes and emergency vehicles working near the roadway. In some areas, visibility was reduced, prompting cautious driving conditions and temporary slowdowns as California Highway Patrol officers assisted in managing traffic flow.

Officials did not immediately confirm whether any structures were damaged or if evacuations were ordered in nearby residential areas. However, due to the fire’s proximity to hillside homes and densely populated neighborhoods in the Encino and Brentwood corridor, authorities closely monitored conditions for potential evacuation warnings if the fire expanded.

At this stage, the cause of the fire has not been determined. Investigators are expected to begin a full assessment once the blaze is fully contained and conditions are safe for detailed examination. Standard fire investigations will consider environmental factors, possible human activity, and any infrastructure-related ignition sources in the area.

No injuries have been reported at this time. Firefighters have been conducting perimeter checks to ensure no individuals are trapped or in danger near the fire zone. Crews are also monitoring for hotspots that could reignite due to dry brush and wind gusts common in the region.

Residents in surrounding neighborhoods reported seeing thick smoke rising above the hillside and across sections of the freeway, with some describing a heavy emergency response presence and multiple fire vehicles moving through the area.

The Los Angeles Fire Department continues to coordinate operations on scene, and officials are expected to provide additional updates as containment improves. Once the fire is under control, crews will shift to mop-up operations and begin a full damage assessment.

For now, emergency responders remain focused on containing the fire, protecting nearby structures, and ensuring the safety of motorists and residents in the Encino and Getty Center area as the situation continues to develop.
