Campania Murder-Suicide Investigation Underway After Couple Found Dead at Tasmania Property

Police in Tasmania are investigating what authorities have described as a deeply confronting murder-suicide after a husband and wife were found dead at a rural property in the state’s wine region near Campania, north of Hobart.

Emergency services were called to the home on Native Corners Road around 10 a.m. Friday after concerns were raised by a family member who had reportedly received troubling communication from the male resident. According to investigators, the family member was not present at the property but immediately contacted emergency responders after being alerted to the situation.

When paramedics and police arrived at the scene, they discovered a man in his 60s deceased outside the residence. Inside the home, officers located the body of a woman, also believed to be in her 60s.

David Gill, a detective inspector leading the investigation, said preliminary findings indicate the deaths are being treated as a family violence-related murder-suicide. Authorities believe the incident occurred shortly before emergency crews arrived at the property.

“The male person has contacted a family member indicating an incident had occurred, and that family member then contacted Ambulance Tasmania,” Gill told reporters during a press briefing on Friday.

Police emphasized there is no ongoing threat to the broader community and confirmed that no one else is believed to have been living at the property at the time of the incident.

Investigators described the scene encountered by first responders as extremely distressing. Gill acknowledged the emotional impact the case has had on emergency personnel who attended the residence, noting that the circumstances inside the home were particularly confronting.

“The scene is extremely confronting to all the emergency services that attended the scene, and the images that they saw inside that residence will remain with them for their time,” he said.

Authorities have since spoken with two close family members of the couple, whom investigators praised for their courage and cooperation during the early stages of the investigation.

Police also noted that the couple had not previously come to the attention of law enforcement regarding domestic violence or related concerns. According to investigators, there had been no prior reports or known history of family violence associated with the household before the tragic incident unfolded.

The deaths have shocked residents in the quiet rural region of Campania, an area known for its vineyards, farmland, and close-knit community atmosphere. News of the tragedy spread quickly across Tasmania on Friday, prompting an outpouring of condolences and concern from community members.

The investigation is expected to continue for several weeks as detectives collect evidence and prepare a report for the coroner. Authorities are continuing to examine the timeline of events leading up to the deaths while supporting surviving family members affected by the tragedy.

Support services are often encouraged for individuals affected by family violence, trauma, or grief following incidents of this nature, as communities and loved ones attempt to process the emotional aftermath of such devastating events.
